ENJOYING THE RIDE, ONE KICKBALL GAME AT A TIME

Details: Gap Striped Tee Shirt, similar-ish here | American Eagle Mom Shorts, here (they’re on sale!)| Timberland Violet Marsh Cross Band Sandal, here

I’d love to tell you that I wore floral flowy dresses all summer with sun hats, but that would be a bold lie. Instead, I wore these high waisted mom jeans and a comfy tee pretty much every other day.  I feel like I always have such high expectations for what I’m going to wear during the summer. I typically stock my closet with romantic maxi dresses and strappy tops, and only end up wearing them once or twice during the season. This summer, I tried to be way more reasonable and practical. And even though my focus is currently on chunky knits and cozy sweatpants, I’m still keeping my summer favorites well within reach.

Enough about my summer clothing choices. Recently, I joined a kickball league with some of my friends, as well as Josh and his friends. It has been so much fun! I’ve never been a sports person, by ANY means. I was always the one in gym class who convinced my gym teacher to let me be the score keeper during floor hockey. The competition intimidated me and I lacked confidence and… coordination. Not much has changed regarding the coordination, but I do have way more confidence in owning what I don’t know and giving the game of kickball my best shot. It has been a blast, and it doesn’t hurt that there’s a free party trolley and a weekly team pregame to calm my nerves. It’s so fun supporting your friends on the field and working as a team. I’ve learned more about myself and made some friends along the way.

So whether it’s playing a sport you’ve never played, being challenged at work with a new project, or learning a new skillset, you’ll never know until you give it your best shot. Never let fear get in the way of trying something new. Even if you fail, an experience is an experience. There are valuable lessons that come out of failure. And I’m so grateful and fortunate to have people in my life who challenge and empower me to go outside my comfort zone. It makes my life so much more interesting and entertaining. The quote below is a gentle reminder to remember what is truly important:

“Your mission: Be so busy loving your life that you have no time for hate, regret or fear.” – Karen Salmansohn

Hate, regret and fear require so much energy. Energy that can be much better spent on healing yourself, empowering others and enjoying the ride. I know that I won’t be the next national kickball champion (if there even is one), but I do have some funny stories to share with new friends and old ones. Enjoy your journey and quit thinking about that ideal destination, outcome or expectation. Everything will land where it’s meant to lay.

Happy Wednesday my friends!

ALWAYS WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY

Details: (old) Free People red polka dot long sleeve blouse via Nordstrom Rack, similar here| Bleecker & Bond Elise Sandals via DSW, here | J. Crew white Toothpick denim pants, here |

I’m not one for following rules when it comes to fashion. This whole not wearing white after Labor Day is a “rule” I choose not to follow, simply because it doesn’t make sense. I did some research to figure out the origin of this silly rule, and here’s what I found via Good:

  1. The rule came to the fashion scene at the turn of the 20th Century. It was when the duration of the summer scene was from Memorial Day to Labor Day. (As we know, summer weather can creep well into the beginning of October, even in Boston!)
  2. Snobby New England elitists used the rule to keep the new and upcoming middle class from creeping in on their turf. This was a way to tell old money from new money.
  3. Why, would we still follow this rule 100 years later? We wouldn’t and we shouldn’t. The end. So go wear white.

Now, this goes without saying but it’s important to wear white, or any color for that matter, when and where appropriate. For instance, don’t show up to a wedding in your favorite white dress. Not cute. Missed mark. And, maybe it’s not super smart to wear white to a funeral. I absolutely support wearing white in the winter months, but if we’re talking white linen in the dead of winter… then we need to chat. White pants with your favorite chunky sweater, go for it! I would be more than comfortable wearing my current outfit (red blouse and white denim pants) in the middle of October. Why the hell not!?

Let me know if you want to chat more about this topic! I could go on all day.

ONE LAST CROP TOP TO CLOSE OUT THE SUMMER

Details: Lace Crop Top via Amazon, here |Levi’s Ribcage Super High Waist Ankle Straight Leg Jeans via Nordstrom, here

Summer is slowly coming to a close and I’m over here trying to get in my last few warm weather looks. I’m very aware that we can expect a heatwave or two in October. It always seems to work like that, but I want to make sure I’m bearing as much skin now before I’m cloaked in oversized knits, jackets and scarves. Layering is so much fun until it’s April and it’s just…not.

It really has been a great summer, though. I felt like I was busy nearly every weekend. I enjoyed a trip to colorado, joined a kickball league with friends, and spent many weekends soaking up the sun at my family’s beach house in CT. Every summer seems to go by so fast, I just don’t expect anything less anymore. This way, I’m less disappointed when it flies by.

I think I’m just in the season of strolling down memory lane, but sometimes I miss the summer days of aimlessly laying by a pool or on a beach. The days when I would make meatballs out of the perfect combination of dry and wet sand, or when I would spend my nights hanging out in the town beach parking lot doused in Bath & Body Works body spray and with a Maybeline JUICY lipgloss in my back pocket. I spent so many summers wishing I was old enough to drive or old enough to stay out past 11pm. Truth be told, young little Jackie, driving is overrated and being in bed before 11pm is a blessing. There were so many great memories and there are so many more to be made. Enjoy every bit of it.

So, to celebrate the conclusion of another summer, wear your favorite summer top and those perfect blue jeans and enjoy the sun shining on your face. Oh, and to pregame fall, grab a fall scented candle…or five.

VACATION MODE: SLEEP. BEACH. REPEAT.

Details: Floral drawstring shorts from TJ Maxx, similar here |

I am SO excited to go on a little stay-cation. Next week, I’m heading to my family’s beach house on the Long Island Sound in CT. I’m way overdue for a vacation and am super excited to have no plans, wear these comfy drawstring shorts every day and lay peacefully in the sand. It’s so funny because the past two years, we’ve gone on a fun tropical vacation and don’t get me wrong, that’s always a fun time, but I like the idea of really having no plans. I spend every day organizing and managing my workload, that I’m just excited to not know what I’m doing and not following agenda or a “To Do” list. Aside from shooting some new looks for the blog, I fully intend on living in my bathing suit, cover-up and these comfortable and socially acceptable floral drawstring shorts. I wish I had purchased another pair because they’re just too cute, but I guess I can swap back forth between cover-ups and oversized tees. I’m also excited to eat home cooked food that I don’t necessarily have to purchase OR cook–whoa! What does your ideal summer vacation look like?

BEACH BUSINESS

DSC_1727editedDSC_1726editedDSC_1730editedDSC_1756editedDetails: Coral red knit v-neck dress c/o J.Jill, here |

Another great weekend spent by the beach and I realized that aside from the fact that I bring some outfits to shoot, I really end up wearing the same thing (or similar things) each day. I don’t know, I just like to feel relaxed and comfortable and when I have to cover my bathing suit to pop over to the concession stand or run and grab a coffee I turn to this coral v-neck dress from J. Jill. It’s easy to slip on and off and it’s appropriate enough to stop by an ocean-front lunch spot to grab some grub. I particularly love this coral color, but unfortunately, they only have the Blue Lotus and Caribbean colors available–both are equally amazing options. Now excuse me while I daydream about the upcoming weekend and seek some more beach looks to get me through these perfect sunny summer days.

ALL HAIL THE HOODIE

Have never been more ready for the weekend than I am right now. I legit feel as though I’m living for the weekend lately and I haven’t really had much time to enjoy Boston. I’ve been on-the-go non-stop and I can’t wait for these weekends to slow down so I can enjoy my lifeless beach days again. This weekend, Josh and I are heading up to NH for a wedding and while I’m excited to celebrate the bride and groom, I was hoping for a weekend where I could live in jean shorts and college tees. Fortunately, we will have some time to enjoy the lake and I obviously made sure I packed my favorite denim shorts and this tab-sleeve knit hoodie. It’s one of my favorite hoodies for the summer because it’s not as bulky as your typical sweatshirt and it’s ten times cuter. I also might add that it looks AWESOME with a good tan. I’ve been wearing it for various summer outings, from late night beach walks to casual dinner dates–it’s perfect to fight off a summer chill or to seek refuge from the sun. I think it’s safe to say this is a sure-fire summer staple. Now, excuse me while I get on with my busy weekend!

TAKING IT OFF (THE SHOULDER)

DSC_1531editedDSC_1539 copy editedDSC_1530editedDSC_1537editedDSC_1559editedDSC_1560editedDSC_1564 (1)editedDSC_1564 (1)editedDSC_1567editedDetails: Goodnight Macaroon ‘Riley’ Chambray Off the Shoulder Top, here  | American Eagle white denim Artist Crop pants, here | Carmen Saiz metallic gold slip ons via Marshall’s, similar here |

Yesterday was the most miserable work day yet. It was painful getting out of bed after such a great holiday weekend, and I know that it wasn’t just me because everyone at work was just as miserable, if not more. Funny enough, I didn’t wear a single outfit I had planned to wear this weekend. When you’re on a lake and the only thing you need is a bathing suit during the day and a sweatshirt at night, there’s nothing more you need. It kind of felt good to just not think about what I was wearing. I wore two bathing suits all weekend and the same sweatshirt. While I enjoyed the simple and lax lake dress code, I did miss wearing this chambray off the shoulder top. It’s one of my favorite summer garments this season and these white denim Artist Crop pants are the perfect counterpart. It’s a simple classic look, but also sexy and sweet at the same time. It can be worn just as easily at a family BBQ as it can at your favorite intimate Italian restaurant. Instead of standard wedges, I went with these metallic gold slip-ons that I scored at Marshall’s. I especially love the white sole and espadrille combination–it elevates the slip-on. Since I didn’t don this outfit this holiday weekend, you can be sure that I will be wearing it several times this summer–maybe even too much!

FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND-WEAR

DSC_1575editedDSC_1583editedDSC_1584editedDSC_1576editedDSC_1615editedDSC_1618editedDSC_1621editedDSC_1567editedDetails: Garage Clothing red and white striped racer front/high neck cami, here | American Eagle white denim pants, similar here | Gold flats via Marshall’s, similar here |

I’m so ready for this holiday weekend! I love 4th of July weekend and unlike past years, I won’t be with my family,  instead, I will be down in PA with Josh’s fam. While I really love being at the beach with my family, I’m excited to spend some quality time with those I haven’t seen and I do enjoy lake life every once in a while. Let’s put it this way,  as long as I’m basking the sun or splashing in a body of water, I’m as happy as a clam. Last year, I went bold with my 4th of July look and sported a full-on American flag button down from Urban Western Wear (one that may have been perceived as obnoxious). However, this year, I decided to go with a somewhat subtle look. I recently picked up two of these racer front/ high neck camis and I absolutely love wearing them during these ever-so-frequent hot summer days.  Not only are they  flattering, but you can go braless without any issues. Sans bra is what summer is all about! As you can probably tell,  I’ve fallen in love with American Eagle’s Artist Crop white denim pants. They are the ideal length for my short stature and I love the cut-off fringe at the ankles–super on-trend! I think I may even have to purchase a second pair. Now, let me get back to packing! Enjoy this fabulous weekend with friends, family and hot dogs!

THE ROMPER LOVED BY ALL

DSC_1695editedDSC_1682editedDSC_1687editedDSC_1690editedDSC_1712editedDSC_1705editedDSC_1718editedDetails: Banana Republic Factory Store off the shoulder navy and purple romper,  here | Franco Sarto wedges via Marshall’s, similar here |

I would honestly wear a romper or a jumpsuit every single day if I could. I actually own enough of them to do so, but I won’t delve into this somewhat, unhealthy obsession. Is it just me, or does anyone else receive a distasteful reaction from their beau when they slip one on? Josh doesn’t seem to understand them and it would probably be an issue if I cared, but I don’t. However, when I picked up this sexy off-the-shoulder romper from the Banana Republic Factory store and tried it on to show him, he actually really liked it. What?! This must actually be a winner. While guys are severely simple-minded when it comes to fashion, I do trust that they know what looks “attractive.” I’d be lying if I said I don’t care at least a little bit about what my boyfriend thinks of my outfit choices. If I love it, then there’s no question, but if I’m having doubts about a garment I usually seek his opinion as a deal breaker. Regardless, this romper is not only super sexy, but it’s also comfortable and easy to slip on and off (for bathroom purposes, guys! Get your mind out of the gutter). It can be made sophisticated with wedges or casual with your favorite pair of flip-flops. I don’t know about you, but if you’re attending a relatively casual wedding this season, this could even serve as a viable outfit option. Throw your hair up in a sleek up-do and strap on some heels–you’ll be set!

P.S. It’s on sale RIGHT NOW for $18–go grab it!

LAUGH CRY & BE

DSC_6379 copyeditedDSC_6345editedDSC_6342editedDSC_6354editedDSC_6398editedDSC_6406editedDetails: Bay Breeze open-stitch pullover c/o J.Jill, here | J.Crew linen shorts, similar here |

Every day I learn something new about myself. Recently, I’ve become more aware of how easily I let insignificant people get the best of me. It’s funny how that works. We spend a great deal of time thinking about what the negative people in our lives do or say to us than we do the ones who actually love and support us. I’ve (slowly but surely) begun to realize how much easier it is to let go of those insignificant people, because, well, they’re insignificant. Life is much less stressful and light when your focus is on the good. In fact, I’ve started to get back into my yoga routine and it’s amazing how much emotion I release on the mat; it’s liberating to cleanse my body both physically and mentally. It allows me to release any pent up stress, anger and frustration from my day so that I can make room for all of the good stuff. Often times, we don’t take the time we need to take care of ourselves in the way that we should. Maybe you’re due for a good hard cry or a belly aching laugh–just give yourself the opportunity to really feel things and give yourself a release. Whether it’s going for a 2-mile run or talking for 3 hours on the phone to your bestie who makes me you laugh every three minutes–give yourself that time to be in the moment. If yoga has taught me anything, it’s that the practice of being mindful, in all aspects of my life, can, in fact, change my life in more ways than one. While it takes a conscious effort to remain mindful, it’s a practice worth sticking to.

Now that I’ve shared a bit of a life lesson/vent session, let’s get on to the mindless outfit post–HAHA! If you’re in the market for a light breezy knit, let it be this Bay Breeze open-stitch pullover from J.Jill. I’m all about the light-weight beach knits and I love that I can don this over a bathing suit for a late-night walk on the beach, and also layer it over a sleeveless dress for those chilly summer nights by the water. I’ve been relying on J.Crew’s chinos for as long as I’ve been able to shop on my own, and I’ve had this pair of baby blues for about three years. They still look as perfect as they did the day I bought them–if I do say so myself.

Today’s take away: do yoga, cry or laugh it out and remember that insignificant people will always be just insignificant.
