ANIMAL PRINT: THE SEASONLESS GEM

Details: Primark animal print drawstring tie top, similar here | J. Crew Toothpick denim pants, here |

I told you I wasn’t letting go of white pants. The mornings have been crisp and the afternoons have been warm. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but I walked out in a full-on sweatsuit Sunday morning to run errands and by the time I got home, I was sweaty and cranky. I feel like they say this every season, but animal print is in fact BACK. That is if it ever went away. The verdict is still out on that. Anyway, as I was running errands I obviously purchased some fall staples, one of which ended up being a leopard print turtleneck. I think what I love most about animal prints is that they’re typically the perfect combination of neutral colors: black and white, brown and beige, light brown and black…the list goes on. I got this black and white animal print top earlier in the summer and I think it can transition well into the fall months. Just swap out the white denim and open-toe sandals with a dark wash denim pant and thigh-suede boots, and throw on a chunky black coatigan, voila! Instant fall look.

This weekend I’m planning to go through my closet and evaluate the joy each of my garments has brought to me this summer season, and if there’s anything that can transition as flawlessly into fall and winter as this top. I think the only word I have left for this post is RAWR!

Happy Monday! Stay sassy.

ME & MY CORE COMFORTS

Details: TopShop Rip Elbow Denim Jacket via Nordstrom, here| Aerie Oversized Nomad Pants, here|Converse slip-on sneakers, here |

I love trying out different fashion trends and stocking my closet with clothes, that much you can tell. However, I’ve never been one to sacrifice comfort for fashion. That’s not entirely true. I’ve done that a couple of times, and it’s not worth it. You don’t look cute when you’re uncomfortable. Wobbling around in 6-inch pumps that are cutting into your heels, what’s the point? I always do like to get a couple of garments that are a bit different from the rest of my closet and have that “outshine” factor, but mostly I stick with what’s comfortable and fits well.

I’m not sure what next week looks like, but the mornings have been a bit cooler than usual, and I’m more than okay with that. This weekend looks fairly mild, and today I woke up to crisp cool brink of fall weather…DELIGHTFUL! So, in the spirit of comfort and a new season, I’m sharing one of my favorite outfits. We’ve got, what I like to call, my core comforts: slouchy Nomad pants from Aerie (available in 4 different colors), a sleeveless sweater top, and my oversized denim TopShop jacket…oooh and can’t forget my slip-on converse sneaks! Which way to the apple cider, pumpkin patch, farmers market, (insert most basic fall activity here)?!?

Since comfort and athleisure have become more commonplace and accepted by major retailers, it’s so easy to find clothing that is not only comfy and cozy but looks good too. Take a look at your closet and identify your most comfortable pieces and see how you can elevate them with accessories, a blazer, you name it, it’s possible!

ENJOYING THE RIDE, ONE KICKBALL GAME AT A TIME

Details: Gap Striped Tee Shirt, similar-ish here | American Eagle Mom Shorts, here (they’re on sale!)| Timberland Violet Marsh Cross Band Sandal, here

I’d love to tell you that I wore floral flowy dresses all summer with sun hats, but that would be a bold lie. Instead, I wore these high waisted mom jeans and a comfy tee pretty much every other day.  I feel like I always have such high expectations for what I’m going to wear during the summer. I typically stock my closet with romantic maxi dresses and strappy tops, and only end up wearing them once or twice during the season. This summer, I tried to be way more reasonable and practical. And even though my focus is currently on chunky knits and cozy sweatpants, I’m still keeping my summer favorites well within reach.

Enough about my summer clothing choices. Recently, I joined a kickball league with some of my friends, as well as Josh and his friends. It has been so much fun! I’ve never been a sports person, by ANY means. I was always the one in gym class who convinced my gym teacher to let me be the score keeper during floor hockey. The competition intimidated me and I lacked confidence and… coordination. Not much has changed regarding the coordination, but I do have way more confidence in owning what I don’t know and giving the game of kickball my best shot. It has been a blast, and it doesn’t hurt that there’s a free party trolley and a weekly team pregame to calm my nerves. It’s so fun supporting your friends on the field and working as a team. I’ve learned more about myself and made some friends along the way.

So whether it’s playing a sport you’ve never played, being challenged at work with a new project, or learning a new skillset, you’ll never know until you give it your best shot. Never let fear get in the way of trying something new. Even if you fail, an experience is an experience. There are valuable lessons that come out of failure. And I’m so grateful and fortunate to have people in my life who challenge and empower me to go outside my comfort zone. It makes my life so much more interesting and entertaining. The quote below is a gentle reminder to remember what is truly important:

“Your mission: Be so busy loving your life that you have no time for hate, regret or fear.” – Karen Salmansohn

Hate, regret and fear require so much energy. Energy that can be much better spent on healing yourself, empowering others and enjoying the ride. I know that I won’t be the next national kickball champion (if there even is one), but I do have some funny stories to share with new friends and old ones. Enjoy your journey and quit thinking about that ideal destination, outcome or expectation. Everything will land where it’s meant to lay.

Happy Wednesday my friends!

ALWAYS WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY

Details: (old) Free People red polka dot long sleeve blouse via Nordstrom Rack, similar here| Bleecker & Bond Elise Sandals via DSW, here | J. Crew white Toothpick denim pants, here |

I’m not one for following rules when it comes to fashion. This whole not wearing white after Labor Day is a “rule” I choose not to follow, simply because it doesn’t make sense. I did some research to figure out the origin of this silly rule, and here’s what I found via Good:

  1. The rule came to the fashion scene at the turn of the 20th Century. It was when the duration of the summer scene was from Memorial Day to Labor Day. (As we know, summer weather can creep well into the beginning of October, even in Boston!)
  2. Snobby New England elitists used the rule to keep the new and upcoming middle class from creeping in on their turf. This was a way to tell old money from new money.
  3. Why, would we still follow this rule 100 years later? We wouldn’t and we shouldn’t. The end. So go wear white.

Now, this goes without saying but it’s important to wear white, or any color for that matter, when and where appropriate. For instance, don’t show up to a wedding in your favorite white dress. Not cute. Missed mark. And, maybe it’s not super smart to wear white to a funeral. I absolutely support wearing white in the winter months, but if we’re talking white linen in the dead of winter… then we need to chat. White pants with your favorite chunky sweater, go for it! I would be more than comfortable wearing my current outfit (red blouse and white denim pants) in the middle of October. Why the hell not!?

Let me know if you want to chat more about this topic! I could go on all day.

THINK LESS & “BE” MORE

Details: Levi’s Women’s Denim Trucker Jacket, here| Nordstrom BP. Long Sleeve Rib Tee, here| Animal Print Skirt via Primark, similar here|

Another summer down. It’s crazy how fast it went, I suppose it always goes by this fast. Since I haven’t had to go back to school in seven years, all of the seasons feel the same to me, except for the hellish season that is winter. We all know how it goes: The summer slowly melts into fall and the winter quickly enters like a diva who just snagged her favorite dress–nightmare!

Today I saw my niece and nephew off to their first day of school. I was quickly reminded of all of my first days. And the thoughts of, What should I wear? Will I like my teacher? Who will I sit with at lunch? Will I like my classes? So much to think about and so many emotions to deal with. We all know that going to school quickly becomes as routine as brushing your teeth at night, but there are so many unknowns that first day. I look back on a lot of those moments and wish that I never thought so much about the “what ifs”, and just let those first days and other life events swoop me up like a sailboat in the middle of the ocean and glide me through the moments. Ya know? Just go along for the ride and worry about the twists and turns as they come, instead of trying to prepare for them. Whenever I start to overthink so much that it starts to consume me, I think of the quote:

“There were many terrible things in my life and most of them never happened.” – Michel de Montaigne

The mind is so powerful, and if you let it get away from you, you could truly destroy those precious present moments and those exciting, nervewracking, glorious, first days. First days of kindergarten, first days of high school, first days of college, first days of your first job, first dates, first baby, the list goes on. So, as difficult as it may be, try and tune out the “what ifs” and focus on the “what nows.”

Now that I’ve shared some common sense wisdom, I decided to create an outfit post of what I might have worn on my first day of school, but, like an adult, almost 30 years old version. Here it goes, a flouncy patterned skirt to show off your hard-earned tan, a simple top, so as not to take away from the skirt, and a denim jacket. A back-to-school outfit could not be complete without it. Voila! Ready for the bus and a post first day Staples run.

While most of you will not be going back to school, and are likely resuming your work routine, but with just an added layer, I hope you acknowledge every moment. Big and small. Time flies by and you don’t want to look back and realize, “I spent so much time thinking, and not enough time being.”

Happy Monday!

MY VIA DE’ GINORI DRESS

Details: Terracotta Polka Dot Tea Dress c/o Pretty Little Thing, here | Franco Sarto Takara Espadrille Sandal via DSW, here|

This dress is called the Terracotta Tea dress and while I don’t believe I’ve been to an authentic tea party (at least not in my adult life), I’m not sure I imagine myself in this while sipping tea across from the Queen. When I think Terracotta, I think of the Italian dessert, Panna Cotta. And when I first saw this dress, its name after Terracotta, the clay, I instantly imagined myself wearing it while running errands in the streets of Florence, Italy. I’m not sure why, but I could see myself walking down those quaint Italian streets with fresh mozzarella cheese and a warm loaf of bread. I thought of the apartment on Via de’ Ginori where I lived while studying abroad, and those hellish stairs I used to climb in the scorching summer heat. Sitting in the kitchen with new friends laughing about the day’s events, planning the evening’s and sipping on wine and cheese. Sometimes it hurts how much I miss that place. It was so special and surreal. I love that this dress evokes those memories. It makes it one of my favorites.

Do you have clothing like that? Garments that conjure up memories? Treasure them.

THE BEST FRIEND OF DRESSES

Details: Blue Floral Flare Sleeve High Neck Frill Hem Dress c/o Pretty Little Thing, here |

I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again: a good dress is like a good friend. It will complement you and make you feel confident, secure, comfortable and happy. This dress probably takes the number one best friend stop. First of all, I love a high neck, so…CHECK! Even though it’s long sleeve the material is super lightweight and it’s NOT see through. I love the blue, but it also comes in a lemon yellow. It’s definitely romantic dress and somewhat whimsical. I feel like it’s something the lead character of a Netflix modern day Cinderella remake would wear. I think it will be perfect for bridal and baby showers, and potentially weddings. I went with my comfy heeled mules but you could also opt for a strappy nude or white sandal. I haven’t really experienced clothing from Pretty Little Thing until now, and I have to be honest, it’s pretty much a game changer, especially if you’re into fast fashion. The prices are reasonable and the quality is super. I feel like if Pretty Little Thing needed a spokes-dress it would be this one. It is the epitome of a “pretty little thing.”

Stay tuned for more SUPER pretty little things!

FLIRTY, TWIRLY AND…PLEATED

Details: White Frill Detail Pleated Skater Dress c/o Pretty Little Thing, here| Bleecker & Bond Elise Sandal via DSW, here |

Mother Nature has finally blessed us with some summer days. I didn’t think I’d see the sun after experiencing an entire month of clouds and rain, with only a peek of sun. This weekend, it seems she’s finally cooperating. So, in celebration of the first official weekend of summer, I’ve decided to pull out my summer favorites and show off my fake tan (lol). First up is this romantic and flirtatious white frill skater dress from Pretty Little Thing. It’s an absolute twirl dress with its delicate pleats and ruffle accents. I’m partial to white, especially during the summer months because it goes with everything and it makes your tan pop, even the fake ones. While the white is my favorite, I am considering getting it in red for an upcoming wedding. It’s just such a comfortable dress and I love how feminine and flirty it makes me feel. The front is on the low side so combatted that with a lace bralette. I think it adds to the romance of the dress.

This dress is new to my wardrobe, but I’m thinking this will be perfect for date nights and days where I want to feel a little extra girly.

There’s more where this came from. Stay tuned for more of summer favorites!

NOT YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOL OVERALL DRESS

Details: Ivory Denim Overall Dress via Forever21, here | Franco Sarto Takara Espadrille Wedge Sandals, here | Mustard Cuff-Sleeve Bodysuit via Forever21, here | Top Knot Headband via Primark, similar here|

I have yet to find a dress that I can successfully where while commuting. I’m still not sure how to combat the random subway wind gusts that swoop dresses and skirts up to your back. And you know how some people have commuting shoes, like sneakers or flip flops? That small reprieve before slipping into your pumps and clopping all over the office. Perhaps I could slip on shorts under my dress and just accept the potential stares and puzzled looks. Or do I just wing it and say, “If you see my butt, you see my butt. Keep walking. Move along.” Still unsure how I’ll handle this during the increasingly warm summer months, but as soon as I figure it out, I’ll let you know.

In case it’s not clear, I’ve stocked up on dresses this summer season. Everything from long flowy maxis to short overall dresses like this one, I’ve been a dress fiend. I LOVE this overall dress because its ivory color makes it sophisticated, while its denim fabric makes it flirty and cute. I especially love the light tortoise colored belt and buttons. I decided to try and accent them with a deep mustard bodysuit, but you can definitely style this a multitude of ways with varying colors and patterns. This is certainly a dress I’ll have to be conscious of walking up the subway steps in but I’m certain I’ll find a solution. As for accessories, did you catch my adorable top knot headband?! I can’t believe I found a headband I can semi pull off. I love this because it’s not a full circle headband, it’s a traditional one so it actually stays on my head. I got two of them at Primark and they were $4!! Too cute and this one happens to work PERFECTLY with my outfit.

So, as I continue to figure out how to successfully commute in a dress, I’ll let you know. However, if you have some tips, PLEASE let a girl know. Happy sticky commuter legs season, everyone!

(PRESS) RESET, FOR SUMMER TO BEGIN

Details: Blue Floral Dress via Marshall’s, similar here and here | Franco Sarto Takara Espadrille Wedge Sandal via DSW, here |

The unofficial start to summer was AMAZING. It was a beautiful weekend here in the northeast, with sunshine and blue skies. I spent the weekend at my parents’ beach house in Westbrook, CT where they hosted a Memorial Day picnic for my extended family on Sunday. It’s always a great feeling to reconnect with family, share any new life updates and most of all, laugh. In my opinion, laughter can cure anything. We talked about funny work stories, random embarrassing moments and everything else you share with the ones you hold closest. To me, MDW is a reset. We come out of this cold bitter winter and rainy non-existent spring, and my default we’re feeling moody, bitter and maybe a little bit discouraged. This time to reconnect is such a pleasant and perfect reminder that family is greater than everything. It’s a reminder that you have a small army of people who are ALWAYS in your corner. There’s no greater feeling than that…other than a warm blissful breeze on a sunny day and a full weekend of blue skies. I digress.

In short, I hope you’re feeling as loved and rejuvenated as I do. Take time to reconnect with the ones you love most. Hold them close, tell them an embarrassing story, share your greatest fear, but don’t let anymore time slip. After all, it’s precious.

And as for some summer style tips: Wear what feels comfortable. This breezy blue dress is a little looser fitting than many of my dresses, but it’s super comfortable and its floral pattern is perfect for everything, from a bridal shower to an outdoor shopping outing. This summer, I plan on wearing more dresses. They make me feel good and I always resort to my favorite pair of jeans or shorts. This summer is the summer of dresses. Stay tuned for more of my favorites!
