It looks like some winter weather is finally making an appearance–I smell snow! We’ve been lucky with such a mild winter, it’s almost freaky how warm it has been. And I’ll admit, I’ve definitely over-worn my knits this winter; I’m just as tired of seeing me in an oversized turtleneck as my colleagues are. Which is why I was ecstatic to find this brown knit sweater accented by white cotton ruffles at the bottom and top. I love a high neck, so if I can’t wear my turtlenecks this ruffle accent will do! Instead of styling this with ole’ faithful blues, I slipped on some leather leggings and stepped up my shoe game with these black suede OTK boots. Not only are they comfortable, but they make me feel like a boss babe. I know we’re all pretty sick of layers and knits, but hang on just a little longer, spring is right around the corner. And in the meantime, invest in alternative sweaters like this one!

What I love most about the winter months is the art of layering. I love layers, and while I can’t always keep my layers on in my scorching hot office, I still like to experiment with different pieces. This lapel houndstooth coat from ZAFUL is so light-weight that it feels more like a light sweater or cardigan than a coat. In fact, I would likely wear this underneath my winter coat, instead of as my primary source for warmth. Its houndstooth pattern includes a hint of red, making it a classic staple. I added layered it over a sleek black turtleneck and faux leather leggings, to give it the spotlight it deserves. To break up the leather leggings and avoid looking like a classic cat woman, I slipped on my OTK suede boots which are just as comfortable as my UGGs (not even kidding). So if you’re looking for a classic topper this winter, go with a fun bold pattern and keep the layers underneath solid colors and simple.

As the weather gets colder it has become more difficult for me to add variety to my daily outfits. In the summer it was so easy to go from sundresses, to shorts, to skorts—the options were endless.  But the colder months are proving to be difficult. I strive for comfort and often resort to my favorite pair of jeans and a cozy sweater. However, I recently across an older pair of leather shorts and decided to give them another shot. It’s true, leather shorts can be worn with any type of top, but I believe their best worn with a fitted sweater. This black and white patterned Banana Republic sweater is ideal because it’s not too baggy, it’s practical and the black and white combination isn’t overwhelming; balancing out the ‘edginess’ of the leather. Seriously, give your denims and black dress pants a rest, and introduce a pair of leather shorts to your mix.

A Real World Downfall

Two words: Leather Leggings. Remember the glory days (hey nostalgia!) where yoga pants and black leggings were socially acceptable to wear to and from class? And then that fateful graduation day came along and the real world was all like “no more naps at 2pm, say goodbye to that two minute walk to your besties’, oh and NO MORE LEGGINGS!” and your just left standing there looking pitiful, in tears with your graduation cap and diploma in hand and worst of all—no leggings to comfort you.  Cruel world! But we all got through it, and all because of these beautiful LEATHER LEGGINGS.  The “khaki” pair above from ZARA is sophisticated enough for me to wear to work, but comfortable enough for weekend errands. I paired it with my brand new layered pullover from Banana, and I like this sweater most of all because of its sheer bottom. I like to call this my mullet of sweaters because its all practical, warm, and cozy on top and then a sheer sexy party on the bottom. Day or night, this is your no fuss sweater!

Current college students, if you take away one thing from this post let it be not to take leggings for granted, you truly don’t know what you have until its gone. While you can revisit your leggings on the weekend it’s just not the same…it’ll never be the same. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!

Outside my Comfort Zone

I guess shorts and tights are my thing this winter season, I just can’t help myself! I paired this H&M cropped knit with these pleated leather shorts, (also an H&M purchase). It’s such a simple outfit and not to mention comfortable, so I decided to accessorize with a black felt hat which added some much needed drama. I don’t know about you, but it’s difficult for me to get used to wearing hats; to be honest, I feel silly. In this particular instance I was cracking up telling myself I was “gone with the wind fabulous” (KIDDING of course) but it helped. Getting out of your style comfort zone is a difficult task and sometimes it helps to put yourself into an already existing character/persona. At the end of the day YOU and your personality alone is fabulous, but if you ever have doubts that you can’t pull off a certain accessory or look just play dress up.  Act like an icon you admire and eventually you’ll know that you are actually as fabulous as Kenya Moore thinks she is.

P.S I apologize for my Real Housewife references. I told you it was an unhealthy addiction!

Layered in Grey

I think it’s safe to say that when in doubt, shades of grey are your best bet. This outfit is a personal favorite of mine, the Banana Republic windowpane black and white peplum sweater is one of my staples,  I like to call it my “Class Act” sweater because it’s sophisticated enough to wear to work, but it has a casual/fun side making it easily worn with jeans all colored denim for that matter. To top this look off, I layered it with my Ann Taylor 3/4 sleeve high collared jacket, which has become such a part  of me,  that it’s much like Linus van Pelt’s blanket (excuse my Charlie Brown reference).

On days like today when it’s difficult to pull yourself out of bed, let alone brush your hair,  create a shades of grey look of your own– it never fails.

Happy Friday!
