WHAT I WISH I WORE THIS WEEKEND

Details: Goodnight Macaroon ‘Riley’ Chambray Off the Shoulder Top, here  | Banana Republic white wide leg pants, similar here and here |

This weekend was your average weekend in New England in May–unpredictable. Friday night was beautiful and ended with a rainbow across the shoreline’s sky. Saturday was blissfully sunny with a comfortable breeze and Sunday was eh. It was hot and cold–literally. Nonetheless, it was a beautiful weekend filled with family, wine and lots of laughs. I was planning on donning my chambray off-the-shoulder top with these Banana Republic white wide leg pants. But like my dad always says: “we make plans and God laughs.” So, I resorted to a look that was much more well-suited to the weather. It doesn’t mean I love this outfit any less. I’ll just save it for a brighter day. I really love this top because it’s one of those comfortable OTS tops; it doesn’t slip off my shoulders and it’s a great length, not too short, not too long. I recently purchased these wide leg pants from Banana Republic and not only are they comfortable, but they’re so easy to wear. They look super sophisticated (and believe me, they are), but the material is practical and comfortable. It’s a cotton mix, making it a casual option that you can bring to the next level or wear with a laid back tee–the options are endless. I had all of these outfits I was wishing to wear this weekend, but I guess I jumped the gun a bit. Just because it’s the first weekend of summer to us, doesn’t mean Mother Nature agrees.

CHIC IN CHAMBRAY

The summer has been crazy busy and I am sad to admit that I haven’t been on my blog game. I let this amazing beach weather get the best of me, and I just haven’t been as motivated to keep my blog going. Not only are there family  get-togethers almost every weekend, but Josh and I are preparing to move in together on September 1st and you don’t really realize how much there is to think about until you’re in it. Regardless, here I am, and I’m determined to get back into my blog post routine. Now, on to today’s outfit. The last time I was home, I went to the Marshall’s and found this adorable chambray dress for $16.99 and knew it would become one of my favorite summer staples. When my mom saw the dress draped over my arm, she immediately recalled a similar dress that she used to have. I feel like I hear her say this more often than not and I’m always annoyed that she didn’t save any of her favorites. All fashions come full circle, ya know! And I love high neck dresses and especially love the narrow cut of the top of this one; it’s sexy and sophisticated. With summer BBQs in full force, it’s safe to say I’ll be wearing this every weekend and even well into September.

Happy summer! Enjoy the sunshine while you can.

TAKING IT OFF (THE SHOULDER)

Yesterday was the most miserable work day yet. It was painful getting out of bed after such a great holiday weekend, and I know that it wasn’t just me because everyone at work was just as miserable, if not more. Funny enough, I didn’t wear a single outfit I had planned to wear this weekend. When you’re on a lake and the only thing you need is a bathing suit during the day and a sweatshirt at night, there’s nothing more you need. It kind of felt good to just not think about what I was wearing. I wore two bathing suits all weekend and the same sweatshirt. While I enjoyed the simple and lax lake dress code, I did miss wearing this chambray off the shoulder top. It’s one of my favorite summer garments this season and these white denim Artist Crop pants are the perfect counterpart. It’s a simple classic look, but also sexy and sweet at the same time. It can be worn just as easily at a family BBQ as it can at your favorite intimate Italian restaurant. Instead of standard wedges, I went with these metallic gold slip-ons that I scored at Marshall’s. I especially love the white sole and espadrille combination–it elevates the slip-on. Since I didn’t don this outfit this holiday weekend, you can be sure that I will be wearing it several times this summer–maybe even too much!

A PRESENT PALETTE

I can’t believe October is over. This month was a especially crazy, with adjusting to my new city and getting a grasp on my new job. It just felt like there was no time to slow down and just enjoy the fresh air and the walk from the office to my car—the little things. For the month of November, I vow to take some time to be present, and enjoy the moment. In terms of my wardrobe, I’ve been wearing out my dark wash denim skinny jeans and it’s getting tired. My standard fall color palette needed a boost, which is why these powder gray gap jeans are the perfect inclusion to my monotonous closet. I paired them with my trusted chambray shirt and with it being coat season, layered on my treasured cocoon in sandstone.  This was the color palette I needed to get me out of my fall wardrobe funk. It’s refreshing, and breaks up the expected fall color combos. Make some bold statements this season, whether it’s as small as purchasing a  pair of lighter wash jeans than your used to, or you’re venturing far outside your comfort zone–go bold. Oh, and don’t forget to take time to be present and enjoy the moment–you never get it back.

WHEN IN DOUBT, WRITE IT OUT

IMG_9224 editedIMG_9177 editedIMG_9175 editedIMG_9243 editedIMG_9265 editedDetails: Banana Republic Geo Fringe top, here | J.Crew (old) light blue chambray shorts, similar here | Franco Sarto block heel sandals via Marshall’s, similar here |

Despite the fact that my tan has been lacking this summer, I seem to have been collecting white tops. I love white, even if I’m not a bronzed goddess, white is refreshing, easy and you can’t go wrong. This Banana Republic fringe top was on sale, (it comes in black too!) as you can see it’s not fitted, more boxy but it still manages to look flattering on. It can be worn with nearly anything, skirts, shorts, and jeans you can’t really go wrong. My chambray light blue J. Crew shorts are old, but they’re classic and I’ve provided a link of a similar pair. I have some time off before I make my move, so I hope to work on my tan while I still can. More importantly with this free time I’ve also been journaling quite a bit as well as spending quality time with family. It’s amazing how much clarity you get when you just talk or write out what you’re thinking, it’s really cathartic. If you’re in a place of transition, prepping for a big test or just experiencing the self-created stress of life, take a minute to just write down what it is your thinking. No matter what it is just write it out, you’ll see how crazy you are when you see on paper the little things that are stressing you out, or even better you could experience a breakthrough with something that’s been troubling you. Take this week to just write out what you’re thinking,  for 5 minutes a day and you’ll be amazed at how much you can learn and how many of your problems will be solved by just taking time to listen to yourself.
